First Two World Series Games in MLB Recorded Lower Ratings

By: Nigel Kerry

I would say, surprisingly the television ratings for the World Series reach a new record low for the opening games. Fortunately Fox announced better news and added that the television increased a bit after Game 2.

St. Louis Cardinals' 7-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night recorded an 8.0 fast national rating and 15% of share, which is down by 16% from the previous record low for an opener, a 9.5 for last year's 5-3 Chicago White Sox win over the Houston Astros. But with Detroit's 3-1 victory in Game 2 on Sunday night which got an 11.5/18, the World Series recorded better rating than the previous edition. Indeed the ratings of Game 2 represent an increase of 4% from the 11.1 rating for Chicago's 7-6 win in the second game last year.

Overall, the first two games are averaging a record-low 9.8 this season, which is down by 5% from the previous bottom, a 10.3 for the first two games last year. Fox has statistics differing slightly from those given above. According to the network, the two games averaged 6.5% in terms of ratings, which is down only by 4% from last year's average of 6.8% for the World Championship Series.

Fox won prime time on each of the first two nights of the World Series. The Game 1 rating was the highest for Saturday night on any network since the NCAA Tournament men's basketball semifinals on April 1 on CBS. Game 2 was the highest-rated Sunday night on Fox since the NFC Championship on Jan. 22. Fox finished second in prime time last week for the first time this season, behind ABC with only 0.1.

Since baseball kept on recording low ratings for all Saturday night programming, Fox are will switch the start of the World Series to Tuesday next year.
