Andrew J. Demetriou, a partner with the international law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski, has assumed the position of Chair-Elect of the American Bar Association's Health Law Section. As Chair-Elect, he will oversee appointments of Health Law Section members to leadership positions within the Section as well as liaison positions with other ABA entities. He will become Chair of the Section at the conclusion of the 2007 ABA Annual Meeting. The Health Law Section boasts over 10,000 members, with diverse practice interests in the field of health care law. Since joining Fulbright & Jaworski's Los Angeles office in 2004, Mr. Demetriou focuses his legal practice on the representation of wide variety of domestic businesses, with a concentration in health care. His experience includes merger, acquisition and divestiture activity, corporate governance, corporate compliance programs, joint venture development and management and regulatory counseling and compliance. Mr. Demetriou's clients include publicly and privately held companies, as well as non-profit organizations in the health care industries, including managed care companies and institutional providers of health care products and services, physician organizations and management enterprises. Having been active in American Bar Association for numerous years, Mr. Demetriou has served the Health Law Section in many leadership positions, including Vice Chair and Secretary and a member of the Governing Council. He now serves in the ABA Section Officers Conference and has been elected a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Mr. Demetriou has also held leadership positions in sections of the State Bar of California and Los Angeles County Bar Association and is a Life Fellow of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation. Mr. Demetriou has served on a number of community boards, including the Boards of Directors and Governors of the UCLA Foundation and the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation. He serves as legal counsel to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission in Washington, D.C. The researchers of Chambers and Partners USA Directory ranked Mr. Demetriou number one among health lawyers in California, citing individuals who state he is "excellent at finding practical solutions." He was also listed among the top 15 transactional health lawyers in the nation by Nightingale's Healthcare Law News. Mr. Demetriou is a 1979 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law and received an A.B. in Economics, summa cum laude, from the University of California Los Angeles in 1976.
