Funeral Dress - What Is Appropriate

By: Peter Watts

Although funerals or cremations are not a time to think about funeral dress fashion, people worry about what's appropriate, dressing too casual or being over-dressed.

The endless debate about wearing black vs. color, skirt vs. pants, tie vs. no tie.

Something has to be said about elegance and timeless style. Picture this;

I once attended a funeral to witness a car speeding through the parking lot to claim his place by coming to a screeching halt with music blasting through the wide-open windows.

Not to my surprise, a young woman stepped out of the passenger side wearing skin-tight jeans two sizes too small, a deep v-neck sleeveless shirt that stopped at the top of her waist exposing her bellybutton ring.

Funeral dress should definitely have an emphasis on timeless style and elegance, not attention-getting.

Remember the reason you're attending the funeral serviceto support and to pay respects to the family. When you're not dressed appropriately, you're not sending the right message.

Using your best judgment is a definite must. Stick to these guidelines and you should be fine. FOR MOURNERS When attending a funeral or a cremation, although black is not necessary, it is the traditional color of mourning.

Stick to dark colors, however, white in the summer is fine.

Backless dresses or tops are a no as are mini-skirts shirts or leather. Wool is always a better choice. FOR GUESTS When choosing colors for a funeral or a cremation, dark colors are your best bet, unless otherwise specified.

Crazy colorsNOTas is flip flops, jeans, fur, bold jewelry and sneakers.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Big No-No's for funeral dress.

Definitely beware of cleavage whether breast, butt or top rear.

With today’s' fashion low rise pants and skirts, bare body trends and the like should be avoided.

You definitely don't want tattoos showing from the base of your back or the inside of the breasts!
