People who are born with or develop specific genetic mutations may be prone to certain blood cancers, and some inherited genes associated with cancer apparently cluster within families. Understanding how genetic changes can predispose a person to these cancers and to life-threatening side-effects of available cancer treatments will be topics of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's symposium on Friday, December 8, preceding the American Society of Hematology's 48th Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. The symposium "Genetic Factors in the Predisposition, Pathogenesis and Treatment of the Hematological Malignancies" will take place 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Orange County Convention Center, Room 224 ABEF. Deborah Banker, Ph.D., the Society's Vice President of Research Communications, will be available for interviews at the symposium and throughout the conference. The prestigious roster of speakers will address how abnormalities in the DNA repair process can predispose people to leukemia, lymphoma and other malignancies; how inheritance of certain genetic changes can be the basis for clusters of leukemia and lymphoma within one family; and the role that small molecules called microRNAs can play in causing normal cells to become cancerous. The speakers will also discuss how a better understanding of certain genetic factors in a blood cancer patient can help doctors predict if a patient will respond adversely to certain therapies. "These important new concepts in the genetics of the blood cancers are likely to lead to individualized treatment plans for cancer patients," said the Society's Executive Vice President of Research, Marshall Lichtman, M.D. Speakers at the symposium are: Alan D.
