Many West Australians have been quibbling and squabbling intensely over the past few months, in the press, on television and getting involved in heated debates all over the state.WA is a state the size of Western Europe but with less than two million inhabitants (half of these in the capital Perth). It has one of the most dynamic, growing economies in the world and Perth itself has the highest housing prices of any capital in Australia.Business is booming. Unemployment is low, the weather is beautiful, there are acres of free space, the crime rate is relatively low, the state is covered in national parks and reserves and most live the kind of life that anyone on the world would envy.So what has been upsetting them so much?Daylight saving.Yep, the cosseted, spoiled, nothing else to worry about majority in our fair state have been ‘spitting chips' about how that extra hour of daylight has been responsible for flowers dying, sunburn, preventing jogging, kids not sleeping, global warming, extinction of the dinosaurs, world poverty, you name it they're blaming daylight saving for it.It is extraordinary in a world with so much sadness, poverty, torture, natural disasters, wars, terrorism, bombs, shootings, disasters, disease, hunger, desperation and unemployment that all this group of West Aussies can find to complain about is putting the bloody clocks back an hour.If that's all they can find wrong with their lives, there is a world population ready to swap with them right now. They have argued also that because they have ‘suffered so much' over the past four months that instead of the three year trial it was going to have before asking people to vote on the issue, daylight saving should be killed once and for all.It shows that it doesn't matter how well off you become, how comfortable life is or how much everything is done for us, we as a species will always find something to moan about. And to put this into context, Australia, including WA, has amongst its population a high number of Aboriginal children who are sponsored by concerned families around the world through international aid agency World Vision.A country that has everything any country could ever dream about is reliant on world aid for many of their impoverished children. If there was ever something to complain about in Australia, this is it.And it would probably interest others not clued into the Australian way of life that we have Aboriginal communities so wasted and poor that photographs depicting these areas are often mistaken as scenes from third world countries. If there is one message the West Aussies who are whinging need to hear it is this.GET OVER IT, you're embarrassing us!
