Urban Plight is not acceptable in the United States and many a politician has run on the platform of cleaning up the slums or shanty-towns. Often these leaders will call for the complete removal of the shanty-towns, sometimes by way of Bulldozer. When this is done voters and taxpayers cheer because it keeps real estate values from shrinking and curbs crime too.What is very interesting is that when we see slums being torn down in other large cities in the World we yell and scream fowl. For instance recently, when an Online Think Tank suggested the bulldozing and rebuilding of the Kibera Super Slum in Nairobi, Kenya the US Director of a small non-profit group was completely put-off by the idea.Yet can you even imagine if a shanty-town slum developed outside Austin Texas? The citizens would be up in arms. It would immediately torn-down. So, it is okay to dictate civic zoning policy and social issues in another country to allow slums to develop in filth situations, with sewage run-off, piled up trash and increased crime to the city, but not in my backyard. Do as I say, not as I do.Indeed, I would submit to you that our non-profit groups going into the World's Slums and volunteering have quite the tenacity to interfere. I would further opine that the helping in the slum adds to the slums growing and brining in more people to get free-services. In doing so, I believe this helps spread HIV/AIDS and breeds the next generation of super viruses or pandemics, as the people are packed in like sardines.I believe this issue to be more about hypocrisy and misinterpretation of culture than assisting people in need, as this assistance is helping cause the problem in the first place.
