Sitting still and waiting for something to come to us, is generally a waste of time. Observe Didi and Gogo in Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. The two tramps, sometimes clowns, capture the crux of lives idling in park. We’re better off keeping busy, even when waiting. It is seemingly a law of nature that action breeds action and outcomes. Too much inactivity breeds, too much inactivity. There are times when being still is exactly the right thing to do. Closing one’s eyes, breathing deeply, contemplating serene places and can relieve stress and enhance creativity. The stillness of meditation is an activity that when done with regularity can bring startling and refreshing outcomes. On the other hand, sitting still and waiting for life to happen to us is a recipe for boredom. Dr. Karl Menninger wrote, “People who wait around for life to supply their satisfaction usually find boredom instead.”We might all be better off if we followed in the foot steps of comedian Jonathan Winters who said, “I couldn't wait for success, so I went ahead without it.” Most of us have a personal definition of success and would like to have more of it. We all have things we need to do, want to do, or even ought to do that will move us closer to our success. Making a list of these items, specific action steps and times for completion is a great way to break free or routine, boredom and unproductive living. The list doesn’t need to be long -- How about three items with three actions steps?” How hard can that be? Do one and you stepped out --two and you’re on your way --three and you’re not boring. You’re soaring. Allons-y!
