One day, as the person in charge of the non-profit where I work, I was called for a personnel incident. We had a new janitor, Jose, who had come straight out of a hard core drug rehab program called Hogar Crea. Apparently, a staff person had asked him to do a small task in the community garden and 30 minutes later, the guy was still in the garden. The staff person was afraid that Jose had relapsed. As I entered the garden, I saw Jose sitting on a park bench. I asked him, "Is everything OK?" He replied with a story that went something like this:I am 43 years old. I have been getting high all my life, since I was 13 -- mostly heroin. Every time I started to come down, I used again. I don't think I've ever not been high any day in the past 30 years until I entered rehab. But, I've been clean for 90 days. Today, I came out to the garden and I was minding my own business when I saw that bird over there and it was singing. I realized that I do not remember seeing a bird before in my whole life, not even once. I saw them on TV and stuff, but never saw one in real life. I used to get high in this park over on the East side and I'm sure there were birds -- there must have been. All parks have birds, right? But I don't remember a single one. And I don't remember them singing. So, I was sitting here watching the bird and I started thinking how the bird is like God. All these years, he has been here with me but I was too blind to see him. When I came back in the building, my orders were strict. Jose would remain in the garden as long as he needed, unbothered and paid.
