Grandparent’s day Celebration: The Work of Marian McQuade to Make a Better Nation

By: Gail Leino

The purpose behind holding a sacred day in special recognition of grandparents, Grandparents day, helps to demonstrate the importance of our elders to our younger generations. The value in enhancing the bond between a child and grandparent in such a respectful manner is vast. Building a bridge to gap the generations proves to be a far-reaching way of accessing information from quite possibly the wisest of our population. Through ways of offering wise advice stemming from life experience, grandparents can serve to be an avenue besides the trial-and-error method of learning things the hard way.

A grand suggestion was brought to the public’s attention in West Virginia in 1973 through a political campaign of Governor Arch Moore. The idea originated from a community activist known as Marian McQuade who was quite discontent with the lack of attention that was given to the elderly in her community aside from the holidays. Whether it was political strategy or simply a good natured appreciation, Governor Moore struck up a campaign to reserve this special celebration in honor of our grandparents and was the first to formally declare a statewide Grandparents Day, held in May. The prospect of highlighting the importance of preserving the family history spread like wildfire.

With pride and admiration of her local success, Marian marched on and soon gained the support of the nation. Rallying West Virginia’s senators, Randolph and Byrd, the idea was purposed to the Congress and passed as public law 96-62 with the signing by President Jimmy Carter, and so went the inception of Grandparents day.

Grandparents Day was moved from May to September and is held the Sunday after Labor Day for a few reasons. First, the May calendar was already a very busy month. Secondly, selecting the time of celebration to be held in autumn holds significance in that the season is representative of aging. As the leaves turn to gold and begin to fall, honoring the life of our elders during this time has an already present sentiment scene.
