Would you walk to your car, open the door, sit down, put the key in the ignition, and then just sit there, without going anywhere? You wouldn’t, yet lots of people exert effort to go to the gym, suit-up, and then NOT work out. Instead of using the ample array of equipment and exercise machines, they park their rears on some flat surface and gaze into space, and if the TV’s on, they glue their eyeballs to it. They’re especially fond of sitting on equipment that other people want and need to use. This frustrates the rest of us who are there not to stare and compare, but to improve our fitness in a reasonable amount of time. I must seem like a freak to these freeloaders because I nearly scamper from one station to the next, getting a full workout done within 30 minutes. Constantly on the move, my body is burning calories for most of my visit. The other day I wanted to use a device and a woman was sitting on its bench while reading a magazine. When I peered at her, she asked in an annoyed voice: “Do you want to use this?” I felt like replying, “No, I want to sit on my butt, just like you, and read your magazine!” If everyone did a fast workout, equipment would be turned over rapidly, enabling all members to enjoy everything that’s in a typical gym; and really, it’s astonishing how many tools there are. So, the next time you’re tempted to go to the gym and just sit, get in your car and don’t turn on the ignition. It won’t make you fitter, but you will save some gas.
