What makes one ATV or dirt bike motor better than the other. What do you mean? There are different categories of motors to choose from? Sure. Everyone has probably heard of a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke motor once in their lifetime. Maybe you never knew the differences. One type is more popular for reasons that you will find out later in this article.A 2-stroke motor is an overall good type of motor. It is quicker on acceleration than a 4-stroke motor, but it is the kind of motor that you must mix the fuel and the oil in the gas tank. This can make refueling a little more time consuming than you may prefer. First you have to figure how much gas you are putting in it and then add the appropriate amount of oil. The best way to refuel a 2-stroke motor is mix the oil and gas in a gas can before you pour it into the tank. This makes refueling much quicker and easier when you don't have anything to measure with other than your brain.Another thing about a 2-stroke motor is that it will emit more smoke than a 4 stroke. This is once again due to the oil and gas mixture. Think of a gas powered weedeatermost are 2-stroke motors. They can get up to top speed very quickly and they smoke a good bit. This is similar to how your ATV or dirt bike will accelerate.A 4-stroke motor is the preferred motor type for most people for a few reasons. First, you don't have to mix the fuel and oil. Big plus if you are like me and don't want to mess with mix ratios. Secondly, they have a higher top speed than 2-stroke motors, even though they don't accelerate quicker. Lastly, the 4-stroke motor does not emit much smoke and makes for a much more pleasant ride when you are the guy riding behind one of these things.Most ATVs you see today have 4-stroke motors, and for good reason. I have found that the maintenance is a little less on a 4-stroke too, but I have only owned one 2-stroke. There may have been some better 2-stroke engines out there that have less problems, though.Make sure you consider your options and know what you want before making a purchase one way or the other. If you race ATVs on a track with short straight areas, you will be better off with the 2-stroke. If not, I would recommend the 4-stroke.
