How I Write Articles

Article writing can appear difficult because many people hide behind the shroud of selectivity and complexity. They know their subjects well and can write well about them. But the underlying process is the same - writing about something they know about or have an opinion about.

I like to read the news. Simply by doing this I can get a feel for what is hot and what might stimulate opinion and debate. Today for example I have heard about more killings in Iraq, an upset in the weather, an earthquake in Sumatra, odd laws on shoplifting and some interesting sports news.

There are at least 20 articles that I could write there.

I would choose one, say Iraq. I would then think about what I feel about the situation in Iraq. I could write about the British and American deaths. I could write about the civilian deaths. I could write about the poverty, homelessness, anger, contempt, distress and anguish of the Iraqi people.

Or I could write about the political situation - the waste of money, the waste of resources, the waste of life. An article or two could be written about the families of the soldiers - their wives, husbands, children - their lives back home, the loneliness, grief and bitterness. The confusion and resentment.

Straight away I have a series of topics. I might do some research to get some statistics on deaths, casualties or costs. Or I might even speak to someone (for example my wife) to get alternative views.

But as far as subject matter is concerned, I'm there and ready to go. If I have the time I might just get on and do some writing. If not I might come back later and do it or just let the subjects lapse.

Whatever the outcome, I can usually end up with 10 or 20 articles just by reading the newspapers and sitting down to think.
