How To Pursue A Goal Like A Coyote

By: Simon Lim

When a goal takes control of your life, and you want to achieve it more than anything you’ve ever wanted before, look no further than the teachings of the great minds for inspiration about how to pursue a goal you that drives your life. When we think of people who have unwaveringly pursued a goal we think of the emperors of ancient times, conquering lands far and wide in the face of defeat, we think of great athletes pushing their bodies to physical bounds most of us mere mortals cannot even comprehend, yet for me one stands out amongst all of them, and he isn’t even real. We have a few things to learn from this great being, if an education on how to pursue a goal is what you seek, absorb the teachings of the great…Wile E. Coyote.

In every episode we watch as the coyote chases that Road Runner relentlessly, applying several tricks and traps, working towards his goal of catching that blasted bird, yet in every episode he falls just short of his ambition. However, all these years of unwavering determination in the face of continual difficulties and set-backs have not deterred the wily one from getting up again, dusting himself off, and giving it another go. All these years of not achieving his goal; most people would have given up ages ago, yet Coyote has never once entertained the thought of giving up. This is the true sign of a champion.

In order to achieve your goals, you need to pursue them like the coyote; relentlessly, fearlessly, and assuredly. Your ultimate goal in life should be the consuming thought of every moment you have, and every thing you do, say, and hear should be something that moves you closer towards your dream. Be like Coyote; chase that dream with dogged determination, focusing on that dream, and never considering the thought of not succeeding.

Of course there will be times when things just don’t go your way. You will be faced with difficulties that knock you down, adversity that tries to hold you back, and problems that try to humiliate you. But this will also make you realise that whatever it was you were trying was not working, and an alternate approach needs to be adopted. Do as Coyote does and try a new technique, and if this doesn’t work, try another, and another, until it all comes together, and you stand on top of the glorious mountain you have just conquered, looking over into the land of opportunity that you have just created.

If there was a real person that Wile E. Coyote should be compared to it would undoubtedly be Thomas Edison. Before lighting up our days and nights with the light bulb, Edison tried over 10, 000 times to achieve his goal, and each and every time he fell short of the mark. Yet he continued to pursue his dream of making our nights a little bit brighter, relentlessly, fearlessly, assuredly, and never stopping, like Coyote, until that glorious day when it all came together.

You need to pursue your goals with this unwavering attitude of perseverance. Yes, Wile E. Coyote has yet to catch that bird, but we are always captivated by his pursuit, and deep down in our hearts we want him to win, because he has the heart of a champion, and we always root for the champion. And we know that when he does finally catch that bird (and he will) we will all cheer.

Develop this mentality, a mindset of unwavering determination, and you too will be on your journey towards achieving great things. The next time you face difficulties in your pursuit of your dream, think of Coyote, and then get back onto your feet, dust yourself off, and try again, and again, and again.
