How to Discover Your Heart's True Dream

By: Susan K Minarik

Do YOU know exactly what your dream is? Do you have a clear idea what you want to do, have, become, contribute? With a whole world of possibilities to choose from, identifying a dream to which you can give your whole heart is not an easy thing.

When I was a little kid, it always bewildered me when adults asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. The fact that they asked me implied that I should somehow know, that maybe I was supposed to be born knowing. I had no idea! I suspect very few of us have any inkling what direction we want our lives to go until we’re already adults. And by then, we usually find ourselves where life has carried us instead of in a position we chose out of genuine passion.

But wherever you are now, if its not smack-in-the-middle of a life-path you consider the most thrilling one possible, you CAN choose to turn your life into the life of your dreams. And it all starts by deciding what dreams call most clearly to your heart.

Start by asking yourself what your best strengths and talents are and what interests most fascinate you.

What makes you laugh? What makes you feel happy? What exhilarates you? What professions do you most admire? What interests you about them? What subjects do you choose when you select a movie to view, or a book or article to read?

If you opened the front door one morning and found a huge box with your name on it stuffed full of cash in huge denominations—plenty to support you and your whole family for the next 20 years and still have half a box full . . .what would you do? Really . . . what would you do?

Don’t let your current circumstances set up boundaries about what’s possible. Once you know what you truly want to create in your experience, life has a way of opening doors you didn’t even know were there.

Need some more ideas to get you started? Take a look at the list of “things I’d like to do in my life” at http://superviva.com/idea-lists/ or other life-list sites. (Just do a search for life lists to find them.) Look at them with the intention of finding out more about what things appeal to YOU. You can start your own list at the site, too, if you like. It’s a fun way to get in touch with your true aspirations.

Knowing what you want really is the first step. Some part of you already DOES know, and when you focus on deciding, you open yourself up to hearing from that part. Setting a target date, say two weeks or a month from now, to choose your direction lets your subconscious know you’re serious about wanting to decide and helps it feed you signals and ideas. Dedicate 10-15 minutes around the same time every day to brainstorm ideas helps, too, just writing about them in a notebook or a computer file. Ask yourself, “Five years from now, I would love to find myself . . .” and write down every thought, however silly or impossible it may seem.

It’s the best treasure hunt you’ll ever do!
