How to Write an eBook

While there is little official data on the growth of the eBook marketplace, more than $30 million in sales were confirmed from eBook publishers in 2006. Also, there is a growing consensus that market growth rates are between 50% and 60% in both sales and new titles. At that rate, the market will exceed $100 million in just a few years! Maybe it’s time you got onboard this fast-moving trend and write an eBook for this content-hungry marketplace.

What’s all the noise about? Well eBooks are, generally, smaller treatises on specialized subjects ranging from “How to Sell Over the Internet” to “Finding God in Your Tea Leaves” – i.e. any subject. The benefit of these books however is that they’re inexpensive, easily distributed and can be used in text-to-speech readers as well. The final benefit is that they’re easy to create.

Everybody has a writer inside. Even you. Let’s say, perhaps, that you happen to have a lot of experience with aquariums. You’ve had aquariums ever since you were 10. You might want to capture that experience by preparing a simple document entitled “The Do’s and Don’ts of Your First Aquarium” where you describe everything that’s needed to set up your first aquarium and stock it with fish.

You create your 40-page Microsoft Word document with that content. You proof read it, title it, add a table of contents, maybe an index, and prepare to publish it. Using any of a number of tools such as Adobe Acrobat (the full version) or Microsoft Reader, you package your document as an eBook. Some tools even allow you to include a password to prevent unauthorized copying!

Now you put your eBook up for sale – either on your own site or via an internet publisher of eBooks such as www.lulu.com or www.ebookmall.com. You’re in business!
