Be careful what you share with others. Even seemingly innocent things can make you a victim of identity theft. Remember what is important to you and to a thief.One of the most important things is your social security number. Thieves would love to have this as, with your identity, they can get a job.Never share your credit card number unless you know who you are giving it to. It is valuable and you can lose a lot of money should it be misused. Most credit card companies would reimburse any loss via fraudulent activity but would YOU notice a $20 transaction that wasn't yours? And if this happened several times then you could be well out of pocket.A study has revealed that over 5% of adults in the 18-24 age range have been victims of identity theft in the preceding year. This is a rise from the previous year. overall, nearly 4% of all adults are victims. That's staggering.It is true that we, as consumers, are doing everything possible to protect ourselves - or are we? Whilst there are reports of identity theft decreasing in recent years, this is not bourne out by the increasing numbers of complaints that are received by the authorities.It appears that there are increasing electronic means to protect ourselves which should bode well for the younger members of our society. yet it seems that younger people are simply less careless. There has, however, been a rise in the numbers of people that are trying to actively protect themselves. And, of course, it is useful to make the issue prominent in the news.
