An athlete practices his/her sport constantly. Physicians and attorneys practice medicine and law respectively. Musicians practice their craft continuously. Many professional speakers practice delivering their talks in front of a mirror. How often do you practice what you do for a living? The Polish concert pianist, Ignacy Paderewski said of practicing; “If I miss one day’s practice, I notice it. If I miss two days, the critics notice it. If I miss three days, the audience notices it.” If you are a manager, a sales person, a teacher, a receptionist… how does your lack of practicing effect your “customers?”Whatever it is you do for a living, to maintain peak performance, you must work on continuously improving your skills. This continuous improvement is what I refer to as “Intentional Amelioration.” Intentional is defined as being deliberate or involving thoughts and planning. Too often when people receive their annual performance review, it is the only time they and “the boss” talk about specific performance improvement initiatives. It is said, in business and life; “If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse.” Who doesn’t want to experience a better life than their parents and grandparents did?Amelioration is the act of improving or making better. To improve our skills at work or improve our personal lives, there must be a plan. As the old saying goes; “The best thing about not having a well developed plan is that failure comes as a complete surprise.” Intentional amelioration is driven by effective planning and partnering. Here are the steps to Intentional Amelioration in the workplace: Identify the current state; Truly assess your skills and abilities Get honest feedback from your clients Record yourself on a business or sales call Measure your effectiveness as many ways as you can Conceptualize the future state; How do you want to be in six months, one year, five years and so on Visualize that future state in as much detail as possible. Develop a plan; Document the actions in detail Establish timelines and measurements so you can see progress Make sure the plan is realistic Last, but certainly not leastGet a Partner that is also interested in personal improvement, and GO FOR IT! Help them develop their plan. Then support one another and hold one another accountable as you progress toward Intentional Amelioration through Partnering To Success.
