I just finished writing an essay on Teresa of Avila, Spain. This was a commissioned piece and I’m very proud of it. With so much emphasis on spirituality, the environment and political correctness, it was delightful to research the life of this extraordinary woman who was always aware that the primary enemy was herself. I am also aware of the cycles of history and how they seem to repeat themselves, even if they don’t look the same. Teresa lived during the Spanish Inquisition and the Renaissance and the Reformation. Talk about social pressure! If you said the wrong thing, dreamed the wrong dream, or were a member of the wrong church, you died. All of this occurred during the supposed Age of Pisces; we are assumed now to be in the Age Of Aquarius (this is due to the Precession Of the Equinoxes, the movement of our solar system around the celestial pole, a cycle of about 25,000 years). What is different? The media is the Inquisitor. It has the power to kill someone’s life in a New York minute. Christian sects are still arguing with each other over who is right, Activists and extremists are getting lots of attention and people who are just trying to live their lives are caught in the middle. An old saying goes, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” How true it is! Still, there is always something new, something fresh, for each of us to discover in our daily life. It is ours to keep. Let’s make the effort to find it. Triana Elan is a professional freelance writer.
