It Is Time to Miniaturize the Global Hawk UAV

By: Lance Winslow

The technology that went into the Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle is truly magnificent, but now the electronics and sensors have become much smaller and therefore it is time to miniaturize the Global Hawk UAV.

It may be possible to build it at least one-third the size with the same capabilities. That means longer-range, less fuel and it will be less likely to be spotted. Why should the United States of America and the United States Air Force Research Laboratory go ahead and spend the money to miniaturize Global Hawk UAV?

It is simple really, less material to build and electronic systems are now available and this means less cost, easier maintenance, more reliability and fewer downed units. It is time to miniaturize the Global Hawk UAV. When is the best time to do this? Right now.

The United States Air Force and other military and quasi-military agencies need more of these units right now and if we can make them cheaper and smaller that makes a whole lot more sense and additionally, we now have lighter materials and the smaller we build these things the stronger they will be.

Why use the Global Hawk UAV design? Because it seems to work perfectly and a scaled-down version would work just as well. It will still be a stable platform, with great maneuverability and it will be a lot less weight. It is time that we consider miniaturizing this unit and increasing production tenfold. Please consider all this in 2006.
