The New York Jets announced that they decided to place Martin on the reserve physically-unable-to perform list (PUP) because of a bone-on-bone condition in his right knee. This will not only end his season before it ever got started but also jeopardize his whole career. This announcement took place after the 33-year-old Martin, who spent several months of rehabilitations, was hoping to make a comeback.Martin, who is in game shape and at his playing weight, met with Coach Eric Mangini on Tuesday night to inform him that he would not be able to participate in the practice next week, while it was the team's deadline for a decision on his availability. He also met General Manager Mike Tannenbaum before taking the last decision.Martin had been diagnosed a torn cartilage in the knee in Week 2 against Miami last season. He aggravated his injury during the next two games against Baltimore. He played despite the pain, but he was forced to end his season after Week 12. Martin explained that the knee became a bone-on-bone situation after the damaged cartilage was removed during surgery in December. His recovery has been very slow. That’s they the Jets had no other choice than to placed him on the physically-unable-to-perform list before training camp so that he had the time necessary to rehabilitate his knee. The five-year veteran was eligible to be cleared from the PUP list on Oct. 16th. Unfortunately the team announced that they decided to keep him on it at least until after the game at Cleveland last Sunday. Eventually Mangini met with Martin, Tannenbaum and the Jets' medical staff on Monday last week. Following the meeting, the decision on whether Martin could be able rejoin the team and practice was postponed to next week. By taking the decision of sidelining Martin for the coming season, it raised questions at the abilty of the player to ever come back. Martin is now considering retiring.Martin started his career with New England, where he spent three seasons. He signed with the Jets as a restricted free agent in 1998. The Giants' Tiki Barber also recently announced that he plan to retire after this season. If Martin also decides to retire, it would mean that there will not be may any running back playing in New York for the first time since 1996.
