In “Outsourcing jobs counterproductive,” Ryan Kennelly asks quite a few questions, so I figure I would make an attempt to answer a few of them. First, Kennelly laments the fact that there was a decrease of 63,000 jobs in February as estimated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The jobs number also decreased in January. Using the same BLS data, but this time looking at the previous 52 months from September 2003 until December 2007, jobs increased every single month, with the average increase being 158,700 per month! He goes on to suggest that the decrease was due to greedy executives wishing to keep more profits for themselves. But a more likely explanation would be the current business climate and the growing fears that the U.S. may be in a recession. Next, Kennelly wonders whatever happened to all the small-town American shops as if they have all become extinct. He blames a convenient target in Wal-Mart. But no one is forced to shop there. In fact, there are many alternatives throughout Athens such as Kroger, Save-A-Lot, Seaman’s, among others. Because of Wal-Mart’s innovations in how they distribute products to their numerous stores, they have reduced the transportation costs associated with shipping the goods to these stores. The by-products of the decrease in costs have been largely passed on to consumers in the form of Wal-Mart’s famously cheap prices. And these lower prices, resulting from Wal-Mart’s innovations, are what attract their customers and what contribute to their profits, not some sort of exploitation often attributed to corporations. Next, Kennelly writes about how Americans like to spend their money on the “stupid” stuff, whatever that means. Sure, some purchases of others may be stupid to Kennelly, you or me; but that is not the point. What is important is that everyone is free to choose what is important to them. If one wants an SUV or a large home and is willing to pay the full price to obtain it, then I fail to recognize a problem. Lastly, Kennelly wonders when Americans are going to realize that they cannot continue to live like “this.” I take “this” to imply our capitalist economic system and I cringe at the thought of the only known alternative — socialism.
