Juice Up Your Goals with Joy

By: Susan K Minarik

The demanding lifestyles we live today can take a toll on our goals. Unless it’s charged with enthusiasm, a goal can easily become just another set of tasks competing with all the other things we have to get done. To keep your goals from shriveling into mere chores, make this empowering practice a part of your daily routine.

Each night before you go to bed, clearly identify what things you intend to do the next day to bring you closer to realizing your goal. As you prepare to go to sleep, briefly visualize yourself doing each item you identified. Imagine that doing them will be surprisingly easy and see yourself feeling great as you perform them, one by one. Then release the images with feelings of positive expectancy and peace as you drift off to sleep.

Each morning, create 15 minutes of undisturbed time soon after you awaken to devote to the practice of goal awareness. If you need to get up earlier, do it; the 15 minutes you’ll spend will generate far more energy than a few more minutes of sleep.

Ideally, sit quietly with your eyes closed as you do this practice. You can set a timer to mind the time for you in case you fall asleep. After awhile, your body will learn to rouse itself after the 15 minutes have passed. Although it takes a little more discipline because of competing stimuli, you can also practice while you’re showering and doing your morning grooming routine. You want to be able to focus on it fully however, so don’t try to do it while you’re performing any task you can’t do completely on automatic pilot.

Begin by running the scene you created the night before, seeing yourself accomplishing the steps you identified for yourself with surprising ease. Run this scene in “fast forward” mode, spending no more than a couple seconds on it.

Next, leap ahead to the day when you have accomplished your goal and enjoy luxuriating in that moment. Fully feel the sense of accomplishment, the satisfaction of knowing you succeeded. Using all your senses, imagine the ways your life will be enhanced when your goal is finally realized. Feel your sense of empowerment and confidence, knowing you have come this far. Feel the enhanced sense of certainty you have in your ability to realize still higher goals as you move continuously toward your ever-expanding dreams.

Continue imagining the completion of your goal for the full 15 minutes. When the time is up, allow yourself to float back into the present as you count from 1 to 5 to bring yourself to full awareness, opening your eyes when you reach 5. Picture yourself bringing back with you an awareness of the skills and abilities you developed as you realized your goal.

To top off the practice, launch yourself into your day with an affirmation of feeling terrific. You might like this one that a young friend of mine learned at a Unity school a few years ago: “I am awake, alert, alive, enthusiastic. The mark of success is upon me. I am a winner. I cannot fail.”

It turned his life around. I guarantee it as a grand way to begin your every day, too.
