Stopping smoking is not always as easy as it might seem. You will be able to find a whole host of advice materials in shops, magazines, books, on the internet and even via such mediums as radio. Many will tell you that it is easy to kick the habit. The reputable ones will tell you it’s not. But, you are likely to know this already. I’ll bet, if your are a smoker thinking about giving up, that you have already tried to give up. And, I’ll bet it was hard. When you did try to kick the habit, what problems did you find? Did you continually search for your next bit of “comfort”. Did you feel agitated and anxious? Perhaps you were irritable or tetchy? Maybe sweaty, lacking concentration and motivation? There are reasons why it is hard.Throughout your “smoking career” you have developed a lifestyle, a routine , a pattern. This pattern is similar to that of getting up, washing, dressing and going out to work. It is part of you. When you wake up, you light up. When you drink, you light up. When you eat, relax, socialize, you light up. And, all the time you have been becoming addicted to the harmful chemicals that you inhale. So, the problem in stopping the habit is at least twofold. First, there is the problem of changing a routine or a lifestyle. But secondly, there is the vexed issue of becoming non-dependent on the addictive parts of the smoking habit. Both need to be successfully tackled when trying to stop smoking.
