Know What Anti-Aging Skin Care Products Are Made Of

By: Geoff Hopkins

My morning facial ritual is a routine activity: wash my face with a gentle facial cleanser and apply moisturizer. But lately it's not enough. I've noticed fine lines appearing beside my eyes and around my mouth. Wrinkles at 30? No way!

Wrinkles are a cause of great concern among women especially for those in their 30s. Fine lines around the mouth and eyes may be visible without make-up. They become deeper and more defined as we age.

Each of the hundreds of anti-aging skin care product flooding the market today claim instantaneous results in eliminating wrinkles or reducing them over only a short period. An article from the Mayo Clinic, however, emphasized that results depend a lot on the active ingredients found in those anti-wrinkle creams and serums, specifically peptides like Argireline and Matrixyl.

Argireline, which has the chemical name of Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 (AH3), is one of the most often used active ingredients as an alternative to botox. It is sometimes referred to as "topical botox". By inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters that initiate and control the intensity of muscular contractions of the face, it relaxes neural endings in wrinkles.

According to the results of a clinical study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Argireline has proven to be effective in reducing the depth of wrinkles up to 30% after just 30 days of treatment, and a 17% reduction of fine lines around the eyes after only 15 days of use. Improvements in skin smoothness (39%), dryness (42%) and overall skin tone (45%) are all very positive and encouraging. With regular use and the right method of application Argireline-based skin care products can produce the expected results for users.

Another active ingredient found in anti-wrinkle creams and serums is Matrixyl, which is also known as Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3. Based on results from clinical studies Matrixyl has shown similar effectiveness levels as Retinol, which was one of the earliest ingredients used in anti-aging skin care products. Unlike Retinol, however, Matrixyl has been proven to repair sun-damaged skin without producing harmful side effects. In effect, it can be used as an alternative option for users who develop skin irritation from retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acids.

These two peptides are synthetically made but are considered safe for human use. When combined with copper, a natural trace element in all living cells, they can stimulate the production of collagen in skin and may enhance the action of antioxidants.

A good advice for those considering buying an anti-aging skin care products is to read wrinkle cream reviews of them and evaluate the wrinkle cream ratings other users have given them. It's better to see what negative and positive feedbacks were given for the best anti-aging creams and serums available on the market today.
