Learning How to Delegate

By: david peter

With the growing popularity of virtual assistants, outsourcing is becoming a viable solution for people with entirely too many things to do and not nearly enough time to do them. With any technological advancement, however, there are those who are reluctant to get on the bandwagon.
Many people feel anxiety about having someone else handle their tasks, despite how beneficial it could be to their careers, personal life…and, most importantly, their sanity. These are the perfectionists.

If the world didn’t have personalities like this, there would be a great many loose ends and who knows how many malfunctioning machines, to be sure. Meticulous attention to detail is a desirable if not mandatory trait in dozens of professions. When this need for everything to be perfect prevents a person from being able to focus on the most important things in life, however, it’s time to take a good, hard look at how important having it all done perfectly really is.

These are individuals who are deeply emotionally invested in having control over every aspect of their lives - even if keeping all those balls in the air is more truly more stress than they can bear. The hesitancy to delegate, whether to a personal assistant or even just to a friend, is based in fear. What if the job won’t be done the way you do it? What if he person doing it misunderstands your directions? If someone else can do it, will people really need you anymore?

Fear limits our ability to see ourselves objectively. Does your boss, your family or your friends really need you to be on every detail, every moment of every day regardless of how minute or insignificant? Most likely not. These important people have the ability to see us objectively – our strengths and our weaknesses. Even the most demanding boss knows you simply cannot be all things to all people.

That’s why you’ve got to learn to play to your strengths. We all have innate gifts and talents and they are most often what we are prized for by those we work for and those who love us. It doesn’t make sense to be the one who handles your finances if you’re a talented musician who can’t balance the checkbook to save your life. Outsource that job and all the others that you’ll never achieve perfection with. Not only is there someone out there who can achieve perfection with that task but you’ll find yourself with more time to spend on the things that you are good at and with the people who so greatly prize those things about you.

Eliminate the word “perfect” from your vocabulary. Focus on your talents. Find an assistant or outsourcing company and choose to trust them. Give them a chance to get it ‘right’ with you. Then go back to your real priorities in life and forget the rest of the details. Someone talented is on it and for once, thankfully, it’s not you.
