Life in Cyberspace

By: SOMNATH MITRA

Life in cyberspace is today a reality for millions. And to make this life a fulfilling one, it is important that you create your identity as you do in the real world. A track-record, a reputation, expertise in your chosen area of your activity - everything matters.

Internet is a vast sea of people. No one is barred. But everybody is wary of 'whom to trust'. This is the most important element of your web presence. The wolves in the sheep's clothing perhaps have some success now and then but their online career is either very short lived or they become guests in the state prisons in the long run. We should be able to declare and define honestly who we are and what we intend to do here.

There are many different ways to create and announce your arrival in the cyberspace. Your e-mail and instant messenger id, your own Web site or blog, or by participating in communities or forums kindling your interests.

Make your presence slowly but steadily felt in a forum or community (one that interests you) by walking around and familiarising yourself with them. Initially you feel yourself to be a little lost and may be a little confused but once you get to know their goals and their culture, you would feel at home.

An online community is very similar to a campus. You should be patient enough to know its pulse. Find about existing members and their likes and dislikes. Avoid doing what is considered offensive there.

As you introduce yourself and commence writing a post or two, members would start noticing you and approaching you. It will make you recollect your college days. Soon you have your first set of friends. Now it's up to you if you want to take it further.

You may be interested to visit a site with links to social networking sites. It is broken down into loosely built categories: business; common interest; dating; face-to-face facilitation; friends; MoSoSo (Mobile Social Software); pets; photos; and 'edge' cases or social networking 'plus' sites.
