List Building - Always Keep It Simple

By: Tellman Knudson

I don't care what kind of site you have, the front page of that site, where your domain sits, where you want to drive traffic to, should be a squeeze page for list building. We've talked about how to make squeeze pages before. You need some kind of image (people are best), some text (bullet points work well), and you need an opt-in box.

List building page opt-in boxes can be pretty simple. You generally get some code for the autoresponder, and then some code for the actual words and forms on your page where people sign up to join your list. Give customers a lead in to the form. "Just type your first name and email address below:" works fine, or something similar to that. Or, you could get a bit more creative: "Fill in this form to receive your free copy of" You can do this any way you want. And, you can generally complete this step right in the autoresponder program.

Next, are the boxes that people fill in and you're list building. If you want more people to join, only ask for first name and email address. You can get the other information, if you think you need it, when people buy something. Don't collect it right away. You'll damage your list building efforts that way because people don't want to give away too much. When they make a purchase, the information will be collected by your payment processor, if you set it up to do that. That way, you're making list building easy for yourself, and easy for the people who sign up.

It's also best to put name first, then email. I know that at AWeber, the form comes out the other way around, unless you change the sequence, so be sure to change that. For some reason, first name and email works best for list building.

And this is important. Change the wording on the "submit" button. Let it say "Free Access Instantly" or something like that. Just be sure to keep it short. No more than a few words. Otherwise, your submit button will be quite long. Always keep it simple for best list building results.

Use about three to five bullet points, then that describe the benefits of joining your list. What's in it for them? That's very important. Why should they sign up for your list? If you don't figure that out and explain it to people, again, your list building efforts will be limited.

And that's it! Put it up, and use your sales page as your thank you page. Set that up at your autoresponder. Got it? It works! Drive traffic to the squeeze page, build your list, and then, let them know about your product or service. Make sense?
