List-Building Success Is Just a Squeeze Away

By: Tellman Knudson

We’re going to jump right into an important element of list building today--building a squeeze page.

A squeeze page is one term for it. You’ll hear other terms, such as an opt-in page, list building page, or a name squeeze page. Alex Mandossian calls it a “shy yes” page. There’s basically one major element to making this work toward building your list. It is a page on your website, preferably your home page, where the only purpose and option on the page is for people to put in their name and email address, so they can join your list and get more information from you on the topic. The second someone has done that, you're list building.

I’d like to give some examples. If you're a quilter, you might want to have a squeeze page where people put in their name and email address in order to be on your list so you'll send them the nine tips to double your quilting speed, or maybe get a list of quilting terms. “When you put in your name and email, you will get our weekly quilting tips.” They can be the most basic things in the world – the simplest, easiest things.

Or, let's say that you were in the military for many years. You might have a list capture page that says, "Put in your name and email, and each day I’ll email you with the latest installment of war stories from 1920, or war stories from WWI, WWII, and Viet Nam.” You only give them a couple of paragraphs, and leave them hanging right at an exciting point. That will encourage them to sign up for your list.

Here are some great ideas for list building for a great parenting site--seven tips to raising a healthy and balanced child, how to get along with your kids, discover the nine secrets to have a healthy, happy relationship with your children, or the six tips to improve any child’s nutrition. Do you think people will join your list to get them?

You can just make these up based on your experience and your opinion. It doesn’t have to be scientific fact. It just has to be something fun, interesting, and something you can squeeze right out of your head at a moment's notice. Don’t worry about whether it’s right or wrong. Don’t worry about whether it’s the best or not. Remember, it’s a website. You can change it instantaneously.

Make your home page a list building page, no matter what. The only job of the main page of your website should be to get somebody excited enough to want to opt in, and establish some sort of relationship with you, so that you can communicate with them on an ongoing basis. If you’re a little bit technical, or you have HTML experience, you can build a squeeze page yourself by modeling or setting other people’s list building pages. Or, you can try one of the squeeze page creators out there.

Keep a swipe file. Bookmark list building pages that create a reaction within you. Go back to the pages that you joined someone else's list from and bookmark them, so you can look back and see what they did to get you excited enough to join their list. Don't copy the site word-for-word, obviously. That's plagiarism. Use what the other people have written to model your pages. In other words, rewrite them so that they're yours. That way you'll have no legal ramifications.

You'll need to set up a form from your autoresponder in the page, too. Depending upon which autoresponder you use, it will be done in different ways. Just be sure that whichever one you use, you ask for only name, even only first name, and email address. This information will be easier to get because people don't like giving out information. If you ask for too much, like address, and especially telephone number, they might back away. After you're established this probably won't matter, but when you're just starting out with list building, you need to keep it simple.

Also include a blurb about privacy. You want to tell people that consider joining your list that you won't rent, sell, or distribute their information to anyone else for any reason, and you have to stick to that. This helps people to trust you and you need to be worthy of this trust. Never lie.

If you can get your list building page up and running fast, you'll be list building in no time. Make it your front page, and your list will start growing, probably from day one.
