Living Air Purifiers

By: Marcus Peterson

Increasing pollution levels in the air have prompted more and more people to invest in air purifiers. These appliances remove impurities from the air using several modern technologies. HEPA filters, ozone purifiers and ionic devices are some of the common forms of air purifiers available today.

Although most people run to an electronic store or online shopping site to get themselves an air purifier, many don't realize that a cheaper and more eco-friendly alternative is easily available.

Plants, and more specifically houseplants, are some of the best air filters in the world. These living air purifiers have been used over several centuries to maintain the right balance of fresh air. It is a commonly known fact that all green plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and release oxygen in return. During photosynthesis, other harmful chemicals such as ammonia, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides and ozone, which contribute to the greenhouse effect, are also removed. Oxygen is the most important, life sustaining gas on the planet, and hence the importance of plants cannot be ruled out.

It is not just the production of oxygen that makes plants so important. They can also be used to actually filter out impurities from the air. A series of tests conducted by scientists at the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) determined that several houseplants could effectively eliminate various pollutants and volatile organic chemicals from the air. The foliage was effective against low levels of pollution, whereas the plant roots along with an activated carbon filter, could remove air pollutants at higher concentration. Plants also prove effective against harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and benzene, which can cause severe illnesses, including cancer.

Chrysanthemum, spider plant, Areca palm, ivies, and ferns are some of the common plants effective against air pollutants. These living air purifiers are not only cheaper and easier to maintain but also lack the drawbacks of ozone emission and filter changes required by many artificial air purifiers. The plants also lend an aesthetic quality to any living space.
