Telephone can be described as a telecommunications device, which is used to transmit and receive sound across large distances. Bell System also owns Western Electric, which manufactures or provides virtually all equipment and supplies used by local telephone companies.

Today's long distance networks have advanced technologies such as fiber optics and digital transmission with multiple digitized switched circuits, resulting in improved performance and reliability.
