Mankind's Future is Space

By: Lance Winslow

Does it make sense for mankind to put all his eggs in one basket and risk the future of the species here on earth? What if a huge asteroid hits the Earth? What if there is a huge Super Plume, which breaks apart one of the Continents? What if an asteroid hits the Moon and the Moon falls into the Earth?

Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Carl Sagan and even Einstein had mentioned that if we wish to continue the human race we will need to populate other planets as well. Because a catastrophic event, such as the one that killed all the dinosaurs can and will happen again. Perhaps not in our lifetime however, it is inevitable that such an event will occur in the far-off future.

In the very far-off future the sun that will expand and engulf the Earth and then burn it like a crispy critter. Then the Sun will retract and die. Obviously there is no use in trying to save the planet at that point perhaps in 7 billion years. Any species that wants to procreate over long periods of time must move beyond its planet if it is to survive.

This is not to be considered a negative thing or a positive thing; it just is and therefore we should be thinking about space colonies and populating other worlds beyond our Earth and solar system. So, please consider all this in 2006.
