Michael Young And Ranger Finalize Contract Extension

Michael Young and Texas Rangers have finalized a five year contract extension worth $80 million. The contract will run from 2009 through 2013 and it includes a no-trade clause.

Young is all set to make $3.5 million this season and the club is all set to exercise its $5 million club option for 2008. After the 2008 season, Young could have become a free agent. However, with this 5 year contract extension, he will be under the Rangers’ control. Young’s contract is the second largest deal in the history of the team. The biggest contract was offered to Alex Rodriguez in December 2000 when the Rangers gave him a 10 year contract worth $252 million.

Just before spring training in 2004, Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees for Alfonso Soriano. This was the time when Young switched places from second base to shortstop. He has been an All Star team member every season ever since he switched positions. In 2005, Young won the AL batting title and in 2006 he was the MVP in the All Star game.

Tom Hicks, Rangers’ owner, said that by giving Young an extension, the Rangers now have stability in the team. He further added that the Rangers may not have been smart enough to draft Young, but they were smart enough to ensure that they traded for him. Hicks considers Young to be one of the greatest players in the history of the team.

Young has had four consecutive season with 200 hits. His 858 hits in the four season are second to Ichiro Suzuki who has 904. Last season, Young had an average of .314 with 52 doubts, 14 home runs and 103 RBIs.
