Murano Glass - Beautiful In The Making

By: Eric Hartwell

Although glassmaking has been an art and an industry in Europe it was only in the thirteenth century that the impetus for the development of the glass bead as ornamental jewelry took place. Venetian glassmakers took to their furnaces to reproduce the gems Marco Polo had brought back from his travels. Soon after glass jewelry became popular and especially Murano jewelry.

There is a small island near Venice called Murano. Since 1291 it has been the center of the venetian glass industry – at that time it was a place where glassmakers were ordered to move their workshops and factories.

Murano glass is exquisite – models of craftsmanship, style and color and the techniques employed and the skill of its artisans are renowned throughput the world.

Murano glassmaking begins with the manufacture of colored glass canes. This in itself is a difficult skill and represents a good challenge to any glassmaker. The different raw materials used in making colored glass are extremely sensitive and corners cannot be cut in their mixtures. An example would be Aquamarine which is achieved through the mixture and chemical bonding of cobalt and copper. Ruby red, alternatively, needs a gold solution in its manufacturer. Different combinations of other materials make other colors of Murano glass.

Each item of Murano glass is unique and cannot be replicated. This is an asset for most people that own and wear the glass because they are aware that nobody else in the world wears or possesses that self same item – unlike with clothing! This means that you can give a special gift to someone you love and it will always be unique.

Murano glass has a perfect quality about it. Lovers of Murano glass sing its praises for the colors, the shapes and textures. Knowing that nobody else owns the same item adds to its joy and mystique.
