A friend of mine (well, not really a friend but someone I speak to from time to time) got talking to me about the time when smoking is banned in public places in the UK.He is a smoker and, quite frankly, I am not the best person to speak to about smoking. I am an ardent non-smoker. I hate the smell, I hate the feel, I hate the taste and I hate the fact that smokers are prepared to put my health and comfort at risk simply for their own comfort. It is selfish.But I digress ..He works out of doors driving a fork lift truck. He is at the mercy of the British weather and does a fine job in difficult conditions. His earnings are reasonable but not massive.His only real enjoyment at work, apart form the camaraderie, is to smoke. But now that is being taken away (almost).From July 1st he will not be permitted to smoke on the job even though he is working alone most of the time and even though he is outside in the fresh air (the air around him is not as fresh as it could be because of his smoking of course).Now he will have to smoke in designated areas and only for 5 minutes at a time. He is livid. He, of course, ignores the health costs to his co-workers and he conveniently skips over the fact that his smoking is ruining his own health and the health of his 2 children at home. He thinks of himself.Well, non-smokers are now thinking of THEMSELVES and are looking forward to July 1st when they can sit in a pub, club, bar restaurant or other public place and not fear that someone will be blowing their putrid smoke all over them.
