Personal Air Purifiers

By: Marcus Peterson

It is a well-known fact that people who are often restricted to a confined area such as an airplane, movie theatre or a subway are more susceptible to disease and infections. If even a single person in such places is carrying any illness, the germs are bound to spread through the air. Hence, air purifiers assume importance to keep these illnesses at bay.

The air we breathe bears many airborne impurities such as germs, dust particles, pollen grains and poisonous gases. These contaminants may cause serious allergies and infections. Air purifiers are widely used today to remove these impurities from there air. Different models use different technologies to effectively remove particulate and gaseous impurities from the air.

There are several different types of air purifiers available in the market today. While some purify the air in a room, the other larger devices can sanitize entire homes. However, for those on the move, these devices offer little help. A personal air purifier is a device that overcomes this difficulty. This is a small, portable and lightweight appliance that can be carried around wherever the person goes.

A personal air purifier can either be carried around placed on a desk or table or it can be worn around the users neck. The latter type is more popular as it proves more effective when combating impurities. Most personal air purifiers use the ionic technology to eliminate the pollutants. Ozone cannot be used as directly inhaling ozone can have detrimental effects on the user?s health. Modern advancements do not use the ionic process but a non-ionic corona discharge to purify the air. Electronic plasma incineration, similar to a lightning strike, is used to destroy the airborne contaminants.

Most personal air purifiers work on normal AA batteries or on a DC adapter support. Newer models may also have rechargeable lithium ion batteries. The price of the purifier depends on the effectiveness of the filter and the battery life. While basic purifiers start at around $50, the lithium battery ones may cost over $150.
