Pervasive Droughts in WY and MT

By: Lance Winslow

In some parts of Wyoming and Montana the drought situation is a huge problem. Many Wyoming ranchers are doing everything they can to fight the dire drought situation. Most are cutting their herd size and some are trucking in water, where there is no well water and the rivers are dry. Of course this is not helping the supply and demand issues in the market either, meaning higher prices for beef. But with herds cut down the ranchers are not winning in any of this.

In Montana the soil is so dry in some places the crop yields are down drastically and they simply are not getting any rain this summer. The clouds go by and threaten to rain, yet nothing happens. The soil moisture issues are intense and some farmers are skipping the next planting phase until things return back to normal, but will it ever happen some are now asking? Both Eastern Montana and Wyoming are in dire straights say ranchers and agricultural officials.

With well water run dry along the Wyoming, Nebraska border and as far up as Gillette, WY and well West past Casper WY some have to ask, is it even viable farm land anymore? Many are likening to the Dust Bowl in the 1930s; it is that bad. So, perhaps we will all consider this in 2006.
