Political Bumper Stickers

By: Kent Pinkerton

The divisive politics in the United States in recent years, specifically during the 2004 presidential election, has created a new market for political bumper stickers. The opposing U.S. parties needed an avenue where they could express their political views. Political bumper stickers provided the supporters of both President Bush and Senator Kerry with a way to show their support for their candidate and their disgust for the opponent. Below are some of the bumper stickers that proliferated during that time.

For those who did not like 'W'

As the campaign became more intense, so did the words on the bumper stickers of those that did not want the president to be re-elected. Some notable stickers included "It ain't over 'til your brother counts the votes" and "W: Let's not elect him in 2004, either," referring to the Florida vote that decided the 2000 presidential election. There were also "Fire the Liar" stickers, referring to the "lies" that Bush told the American people about Iraq. On a similar note, there were also "Bush '04 Four More Wars" stickers that were very popular, given the perceived preference of the president to wars over diplomacy.

Those who did not like Kerry

Senator John Kerry also received his fair share of bumper stickers that showed the people?s dislike for the senator. Some notable ones include "Better Bushed than Kerried," and "Kerry for President -of France" bumper stickers that were also very popular. Other bumper stickers included "Kerry's scary" and "Flush the Johns Nov. 2" stickers, which refer to the names of both the presidential candidate and his running mate, Senator John Edwards.

The political bumper stickers that proliferated during the 2004 presidential campaign have effectively shown the divide among the American people with regard to their political views. Given this, it can be expected that in 2008, there will be more humorous bumper stickers to take notice of.
