Proverbial Proverbs

By: Jim Gustafson

A proverb is a short pithy statement that is often quoted and generally believed to contain a kernel of truth. We can add to that definition and say that the truths contained in proverbs are generally ignored in every day living. After all, how many proverbs do you really incorporate into your behavior? I suspect that one of the reasons is that each proverb seems to have an antithetical partner. Someone said that proverbs should be sold in pairs, because a single proverb always contains but half the truth. For example:

* Is A bird in the hand worth two in the bush or should a man's reach

exceed his grasp?

* Is a miss is as good as a mile or is a half a loaf better than none?

* Do opposites attract or do birds of a feather flock together?

* Do clothes make the man or should we not judge a book by its cover?

* Should I cross a bridge when I come to it or should I be forewarned and

forearmed?

* Do good things come in small packages or is the bigger the better?

* Should he look before he leaps or will he who hesitates be lost?

* Is silence golden or does the squeaky wheel get the oil?

* Am I never too old to learn or can an old dog really not be taught new

tricks?

* Actions speak louder than words or should I do as you say and not as you

do?

* Do barking dogs seldom bite or is the bark only bigger than the bite.

Sticks and stones.
