Quebec

Quebec is the Canada largest province and it is one of the wilderness with eighty percent covered by the Canadian Shield and two thirds by forest. The northern forests are coniferous providing for a pulp and paper industry. The southern forests are deciduous including the beloved maple tree. It is the maple tree that provides enough delicious maple syrup to make Quebec the world largest producer of this sweet sauce which is the truly Canadian treat on ice cream and pancakes. Much of the agriculture here takes place in the Saint Lawrence Lowlands.

With so much wilderness it is not surprising that a great part of the province remains unspoiled and remote. The Gaspe Peninsula which is the southern Quebec remotest area has industry that consists mostly of fishing and forestry, but many crafters sell their works as well. In the town of Gaspe where the first Canadian landing of Jacques Cartier took place in 1534, sailing and windsurfing on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence are top notch. Nearby the resort town of Perce is the busiest spot on the peninsula where people enjoy watersports, fine hotel accommodation and the natural beauty and wonder of the cliffs that are pierced by the sea.

Quebec mountain range called the Laurentians provides the best skiing in eastern Canada by winter and serves as a popular summer destination as well. Mont Tremblant is a major ski center and it boasts the highest peak in the Laurentians. Less than an hour drive from the solitude of the Laurentians is the Canadian second largest city – Montreal.
