The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is delighted to announce the appointment of its new General Secretary, Dr Peter Carter OBE. Dr Carter is currently the Chief Executive of the Central and North West London Mental Health NHS Trust, one of the largest mental health trusts in the UK, a post he has held since 1995. Dr Carter will take over from current RCN General Secretary, Dr Beverly Malone, who steps down in December after nearly six years at the helm of the world's largest trade union of nurses. Dr Carter commenced his NHS career by training as a psychiatric nurse at Hill End Hospital in St Albans. He is also a general nurse having trained at St Albans City Hospital and the Institute of Urology in London. Speaking on behalf of RCN Council, Chair Eirlys Warrington said: “Peter Carter proved himself to be an outstanding candidate and RCN Council made a unanimous decision to appoint him. Peter is an experienced and respected senior figure within the NHS and we are confident he has the vision and commitment to lead the RCN.” Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is the voice of nursing across the UK and is the largest professional union of nursing staff in the world. The RCN promotes the interest of nurses and patients on a wide range of issues and helps shape healthcare policy by working closely with the UK Government and other national and international institutions, trade unions, professional bodies and voluntary organisations.
