Search engine optimization is something that puzzles some, terrifies others and completely baffles the rest. The amusing thing is that search engine optimization, or SEO, is a simple matter of logic and common sense. The principles outlined here are based on Google, though they apply to all true search engines. There are certain known rules to be followed when you build your site to be search engine friendly, and then there are the variables that Google tend to change from time to time to ensure that their customers are given the choice of websites that best meet their search criteria. Before you even consider your content, it is important to understand how search engine spiders crawl your site. We will discuss the tabular structure of a web page, rather than CSS, since that is the way most beginners build their site.Spiders scan from top left to bottom right. They do so from table to table and column to column, so it scans the whole of each column in table one in sequence before it goes to table two. Your title must be the first text that the spider sees, and that should be in bold text in H1 tags, signifying it as the most important text on the page. Your title should include the keyword for the page.Search engines generally seem to regard the three to four hundred words of text it reads as being more important than the rest. If you have a left hand navigation links column, which is quite common, the first text the spider reads after your title are navigation links that are not only irrelevant text but could also sidetrack the spiders if they follow these links. So you should use a subterfuge to overcome this.
