The problem was that as more people began to understand how search engines worked, they would list keywords in the meta tags and stuff the body text full of them. Keyword stuffing became common, such as: “Siamese cats are wonderful and Siamese cats are great. Siamese cats are fluffy animals but Siamese cats are not as fluffy as cats less fluffy than Siamese cats. Siamese cats do not come from Siam, but Siamese cats are found everywhere. Siamese cats are bred as Siamese cats from Siamese cats males and Siamese cats females to produce Siamese cats kittens.”Believe it or not, there was a time, when meta keywords tags were important, that such text would be listed highly in Google for the keyword ‘Siamese cats’. This is because the keyword tag informed the search engine that ‘Siamese cats’ was the theme of the page, and the search engine spider found enough instances of the term in the body text to rate it highly relevant for that keyword. However, thankfully, no longer. Few people now believe keyword tags to be used, but many include them in the html on their webpage ‘just in case’. They don’t believe in it but are taking out an insurance policy, just as many people pay lip service to religion. The fact is that most search engines ignore keyword tags altogether. Their misuse in the past has more or less lead to their demise, and the spiders instead will check the semantics, or use of words, on the page rather than seek any specific keywords. Two or three incidences of a specific keyword per 500 words are acceptable, but otherwise the algorithms can detect the relevance of the page to a search term from the semantics used on the page.If you are designing a webpage, you need keyword tags. You no longer have to tell your friendly neighborhood spider what your webpage is about because it can read for itself. The crawler, or its algorithm, is a lot more literate than your are, and has a considerably wider vocabulary and sense of the correct grammatical use of words and their semantics. You cannot fool it by giving it useless information at the beginning of your page: it will find you out. There is nothing to stop you from using a keyword meta tag in your html, but keyword tags are necessary and more or less redundant. If you want your webpage to be listed high in the index for a specific search term, write naturally. Do not artificially use keywords and the spiders will love you for it.
