Save Money By Catching Your Own Worms

By: Trevor Kugler

If you're anything like me, you go to the local bait shop and buy a couple containers of worms every week. At two to three dollars a container, this gets a bit pricey after a month or so. Some may say this is the essence of being a cheapskate, but hey it's an option if you're interested. All you need is a few things.

First of all, you need it to be dark. I usually wait until it's been dark for a few hours. If you try to catch night crawlers right after the sun goes down, you won't have much success. The second thing you need is an open area of grass. Yards work great. Actually, I tend to think this is why we humans created yards. To catch our own worms, but I digress. If you live in an apartment or don't have a yard, go to the local park. At the end of the day, you just need a yard-like area. The third integral factor is that whatever grassy are you're using is damp. After a rainstorm is perfect, but if rain just isn't in the cards, you're going to have to water the area for an hour or so, before you go "worm hunting". Now that we have the three main areas covered (a grassy area, wet, and dark) we can begin.

The next two things to remember are that you must walk softly and be quiet. The little buggers are quite skittish. I like to look for them in bare feet, but a pair of aqua socks would work well also. Now just grab a normal flashlight, and begin shining it in the grass right in front of you. As you walk, you'll see worms exposed out of the ground. Obviously the more exposed they are, the more of a chance you have of catching them.

When you shine your light on one that's exposed, quickly take the light off of them and get ready. If you leave the flashlight shining on them, many times they will just dart back into the ground. So now that you know where one is, get your thumb and index finger ready. Your going to want to cast just enough light on the worm too be able to see where to grab it. Then just bend down close to it and trap the worm between you fingers. Or trap the worm between your fingers and the ground. Either way, but as soon as you touch the worm, it's going to try to sneak back into the ground. So you want to use a bit of pressure. Once you have a hold of the little bugger, simply pull it out of the ground. That's it. Then you just repeat this process until you have your desired amount of worms. As long as it's dark and the grass is wet, you'll be amazed at how many worms you can catch. I've caught upwards of a hundred in one night many times. And if you start adding up how much money those worms would cost you if you bought them at the local store, you'll be amazed. You'll probably also be a "worm hunter" from that point on.
