Search Engine Spider

The fourth band final basic rule is not to confuse the search engine spiders. When a search engine spider/crawler reaches your site it looks at the html only. It cannot recognize flash animation or Java script, so if you want to have your site well optimized, keep off the fancy stuff. The algorithm (a mathematical formula aka spider aka crawler) will check your Meta tags for any useful information that could help them. The meat tags are not normally used directly, but just for an indication. It is wise to include them.

The search engine spider/crawler then goes to the top left column and works down it, then the next column and so on. It regards anything in H1 tags as being important, so the first text it should come across should be the headline, which should be the keyword, of the webpage in H1 tags and in bold and capital text. There are many other SEO tips but these are the main four.

Incidentally, if you have a left hand navigation column, make sure you have a blank column above it, so that the spider will check the blank column as the top left, then the main content column as the next left. It will find the navigation column after the man text column. This is very important for the search engine spider.

But that’s another story. Your basic four rules of search engine optimization are to write naturally, tell the search engine spider what your keyword is and don’t overuse it, get lots of back links and use your html properly to give the spiders information, in addition to navigating them, about your page. You can even stop them being distracted by using a specific term in the html to prevent them following certain links from your site.

Search engine optimization would make a good game show called “Neat the Spider”, but it never quite makes it. Just as SEO seems to be getting effective, along comes Google and spoils the show with another algorithm. The key is to make things easy for the search engine spider.
