The advertisement of anti-smoking program usually provides a toll-free number that you can ring if you want help in giving up smoking. This is a very effective way of using the media to put a message across. The NHS made the a commercial and has made other ads about second hand smoke for example the one with the young children. These have been reported to be very successful in helping people cut down on smoking. This is quite an expensive way of using the media to put a message across although it is seen by a lot of people. The campaign also includes other advertising strategies such as the radio, press and ambient advertising. The language used in the video clip was very clear and straight forward, and the images of the family were very clear and real. These are all advantages in putting across the message that the advert aims too, because if someone can easily understand and see exactly what is going on it will be more successfully. From the four media coverage’s of smoking including reportage, documentary, drama and marketing I think that they all put across the message that smoking is now becoming an unsocialable habit. I got the impression that because advertisements of smoking are now banned in Britain smoking is becoming more popular on tv, this may be a result of tobacco companies in a way to make money. The advertisement campaign on second hand smoking launched a hard-hitting messages across England in 2003 and the report made on the BBC news about raising the legal age of smoking from 16 to 18 gives out the message that smoking should be an adult activity and something that children should not be exposed to. Even in the film of 101 Dalmatians the impression is giving that smoking is bad as it is the villain that smokes. And finally in the documentary it gives the impression that because the celebrities are looked up to by so many young people then they should not be participating in an act that is so socially unacceptable anymore.I think that because of the negativity that the media are giving to smoking it is raising the awareness to the health risks associated with the habit. There has been a lot of disapproval towards people smoking in public places, action has been taking on this in the republic of Ireland as they have introduced a no-smoking ban in the workplace, this has worked and may be the answer to the health of the population in other countries including England.Due to the media and their coverage of smoking as such an unsociable habit it is no longer considered a polite or acceptable form of public behaviour, it has now even emerged that some medical practitioners may refuse to treat people who smoke and life insurance has increased for those who smoke. All of these factors are put across to the pubic in some form of media whether it is magazines, tv, or news reports which proves the point that the media is an important means of getting information to the public.
