If you are like most people who want the best for their lives, you are endeavouring to succeed at everything you do. Most of the time, the way this is judged is by comparing yourself with others to see if you are more successful than they are. However, the secret of success isn’t found in achieving a higher level of success than someone else has attained. The reason is because success is relative to who you are. Let me explain. I was a huge Michael Jordan fan back in the day. He was, and still is, considered by most people to be the best basketball player that has ever played. However, the only way he got to that level was by achieving his personal best. You see, Michael could have tried to just be better than everyone else in the game and he still would have been a great player. But just being better than everyone else doesn’t mean that he has reached the highest level of success. The only way that he could become a legacy was by continually playing better than he had played six months previously.Likewise, for you to have more success than everyone else you have to be the best you that you can be. Just because you may have more success than someone else doesn’t mean anything if you haven’t reached the full potential in your own life. Why settle for just living a life of success when you could have a life of greatness? In the words of William Faulkner, ‘Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.’
