Setting Up a Neighborhood Mobile Watch Patrol in Northwest Los Angeles

One way a community can combat crime is to get with the business community and set up a neighborhood watch patrol, where local companies on their routes with work vehicles report suspicious behavior to authorities. It works. What type of service or work vehicles make the best participants?

Well, on the Private Side, it is best to get with companies which have a "Community Minded-ness" attitude to them. Thus it makes sense to go to the Local Chambers of Commerce and ask the Presidents, which companies best fit that bill. You want companies, which have the proper image, employees wear uniforms and vehicles have two-way dispatch or perhaps use Motorola or Nextel.

Shoddy looking vehicles that are perpetually dirty and in the state of disrepair will distract from your program and PR. Next it is good to consider Utility Company Vehicles as well to help, there are thousands of them. Will this concept work anywhere, even in Northwest LA? Surely it will and if you do a nice pilot program and it is met with success you should be able to expand the program throughout LA.

My thinking is that LA is a tough market and this will help you run zone defense against the gangs. The gangs are so highly mobile that the larger the program gets the better. But you must eventually incorporate some policing rivalry with other local cities, some work well together, but not all.
