Shoe On The Other Foot

By: Marco Miranda

The papers were full of it. It reported that "Russian President Vladimir Putin had criticized in no uncertain terms the United states increasing use of force and is without doubt creating a new arms race, with smaller nations intent on becoming nuclear powers. He further added that we are witnessing an almost uncontained hyper-use of force in international relations. The United States has overstepped its national borders in every way"

Before our usual rebel rousers start spilling their beans against Putin and Russia, I suggest they think for a moment. I know it is an almost impossible task, but it is worth a try anyway. Let me paint a picture.

Russia has just invaded Bolivia, claiming that its tin mines are a health hazard for the citizens of St. Petersburg and Odessa. Its Secretary of Defense, extraterrestrial by nature, bombs the living heck out of La Paz and disbands the Army, the Police, the Sanitation Department and the Wal Marts still open.

The Vice President then assures the Russian people that the Bolivians will receive the Russian troops with flowers and coca leaves. The new Secretary of State, Ilianavich Rizotsky, travels the globe promoting love, democracy and liberty along with new oil leases.

In the meanwhile, the Russian President insults every country within reach, thumbs his nose at the UN, straps himself in a Tupolev 307 and lands in the middle of the frozen Neva River announcing that the Mission Has been Accomplished.

At that moment the clever Vice President initiates a round of meetings with former associates for the purpose of arranging contracts to rebuild Bolivia and supply it with their own tin to make beer cans, new iPods and pizza containers. When the Vice President is questioned by a member of the Supreme Council about the secret negotiations with the contractors, he tells them to go f.. themselves. It is not something that even Joe Stalin would dream of doing.

Now, would the US just sit and watch the Russians make a mess of things?
