Short Sleeves Insights - Next Stop, Within!

By: Hal Manogue

"I want to go away, hundred of miles from my mind. I want to be free from good and bad. So much beauty is behind this curtain. Here, there is my real being. Oh, you ignorant ones, I want to be in love with myself." What a trip with Rumi! His words inspire thoughts of travel without ever leaving home.

Over the years, I have called myself many things, I won't go into all the names I used or even the names others used for me. All of these labels are just that. My physical body is a field of energy. A group of atoms, molecules and cells, shaped into a form, that is changing all the time. When asked my name, my lips speak it, but the name does not belong to the atoms and molecules in my lips. The name has meaning to me, but I can't put my finger on my own identity.

If I travel within my body and spirit( I could, by the way), I still can't find where my identity resides, but I still say,"This is my name."

There is a connection of body with my identity, I have no trouble distinguishing it from another body or chair. If I can't find my identity within my body, then where is it? Where is this identity that holds my cells and organs together? My consciousness or spirit, can be seen from the same viewpoint. It knows who it is and is far more certain of its identity than my body, but yet I cannot find it anywhere in the electromagnetic field of energy. I know it resides somewhere but where? If I join my thoughts of body and spirit, I do realize an identity creates a physical life, but it is not a complete identity. It is only my physical explanation of identity. I still have not found the answer, but now I sense the possibility that my consciousness has more identities that just physical and could express itself in many ways and forms and still maintain its own identity.

Dreaming for example, this journey takes me to places I've known but forgotten. My consciousness is not as closed or restricted as I may think, but capable of many possibilities of development and expansion. My own thoughts of limitations and fear for my own physical identity, fog my perceptions, because I'm afraid I could not handle anymore and retain my selfhood.

Consciousness is not built on the precepts of good and evil, that concern my physical identity. By traveling within my consciousness, I can begin to feel myself. This spiritual exploration is not one of finding what I have lost, but one of awareness. My identity resides in many places, my inward perceptions will lead me to the places I choose to go. My intent is to identify the other aspects of the I, I call myself.

My consciousness is a traveler and is also a creator of the experiences and destinations in this world and the many others that exist. It puts a whole new spin on cheap travel!
