Simple CD Covers

By: Hubert Crowell

For many years now I have been protecting my CD's with a simple paper envelope that I fold from a standard sheet of paper (8 1/2 inch by 11 inch). Although plastic cases and CD slip cases are not expensive, they are not always handy and require more storage space.

By making three marks on a sheet of paper and four folds, I have a simple slip case that I can label and store with little more space required than the CD itself.

Cut a template from card stock that is 10 inches long with a 1 3/4 inch rectangle cut from each side. Align the bottom edge with a sheet of paper and make three marks, one on each side and one at the top. Fold the two sides in toward the middle and fold the bottom up to the mark at the top. Then fold the 1 inch flap over to lock it together. You now have a perfect 5 inch by 5 inch slip case.

I used to cut the edges off the flaps and glue down the two tabs, but found that it was a waste of time. If you want a nice picture or label on the slip case, you can print it on the paper before folding. If you are printing the case, print the fold marks also and avoid the use of a template.

It takes about as much time to fold the slip case as it would to reach for a pre-made one and you save a few pennies at the same time.

After working in service for 23 years with Eastman Kodak Company as a service person, technical support and training specialist, followed by another 13 years working for other companies in the service field, I have decided to share my ideals on improving the service department. I would like to thank Jack Ingram, my supervisor at Eastman Kodak Company for the encouragement and guidance until his retirement. I would also like to thank Barco Projection Systems and all the great employees that worked with me for the last seven years before I retired.
